FOUND A STRAY
If you find a dog or cat and are not sure what to do, please read the what to do if you find a stray page which offers some suggestions and where you can go for help. After reading the section, if you end up rescuing the dog, or in circumstances where individuals need to re-home their own pet, our Private Adoption Assistance Program is available free to participants and prospective adopters.

PRIVATE ADOPTION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
As our space allows, Pet Orphans rescues dogs and cats from city and county shelters, and then provide them with the highest quality care until a loving, permanent home is found for them.

For individuals (“Participants”) who find it necessary to re-home a dog or cat, or for those who have rescued an animal and have been unsuccessful at locating the owner, we offer the opportunity for them to spotlight the dog or cat on this website in an effort to assist them with finding a new home. (Please read the section on Re-homing a Pet for further information.)

For dogs and cats that meet the following criteria, we will include a photo of the animal and a brief informative description. There is no cost for this program to the Participant or prospective adopters, and we will assume administration of the website. However, due to the lack of staff to handle calls about this program, we ask that the PARTICIPANTS AND PROSPECTIVE ADOPTERS NOT CALL Pet Orphans. These are private adoptions and prospective adopters need to contact the Participant listed for further information.

PARTICIPANTS:
Before submitting a pet for inclusion, be sure that the pet meets the criteria listed below:

  1. The pet MUST be spayed or neutered before being submitted to Pet Orphans Private Adoption Assistance Program website. (Exceptions to sterilization include medical conditions or if under 6 months of age).
  2. The pet must be current on required shots.
  3. The rescuer has made all possible attempts to find the original owner.

Furthermore, prior to submitting a pet for inclusion, the Participant agrees:

  1. Not to contact Pet Orphans by phone, but may e-mail corrections and updates on the pet bio.
  2. To immediately notify Pet Orphans of Southern California by e-mail upon the successful adoption of the pet, and provide information on where the adopter learned of the pet.

To submit your pet for inclusion, please send an e-mail to miriam@petorphans.org with an attached digital photograph of the pet. If submitting more than one pet, the file must be saved with the pet's name. Also include a complete description of your pet, including the current name, breed, sex, age, weight and information on the temperament and health of the dog or cat. Also list your name, telephone number and/or e-mail address where you can be contacted or receive messages from prospective adopters. We will be unable to include the pet without the above information.

Suggestions for Participants: Following is a “Pledge for New Dog Adopters” which we recommend you read, print out and utilize when screening prospective adopters. Most of the points are also appropriate for the adoption of cats.

PLEDGE FOR NEW DOG ADOPTERS

  • I pledge to make a reasonable commitment of time and effort, and to affect scheduling and lifestyle changes in order to make this relationship work.
  • I pledge to make sure my dog is not exposed to the elements of weather without proper shelter, shade cover, dry ground, access to fresh water and at least 1 hour of loving companionship and play a day. (I understand this is a minimum and will strive to keep the dog with me as much as possible and treat him/her as an important member of my family.)
  • I pledge to provide appropriate and timely veterinary care for the life of my dog.
  • I pledge to provide my dog with the proper nutrition for optimum health, and to keep my dog the proper weight, neither obese nor emaciated.
  • I pledge to keep this dog indoors at night, and to include him/her in the activities of the household while we are home, as much as possible.
  • I pledge to keep my dog groomed and free of external parasites and matting (particularly behind my dog’s ears, under his elbows, his tail and thighs).
  • I pledge to spay or neuter my dog, if he/she is not already done.
  • I pledge to give my dog ample aerobic exercise daily, and make sure that at least three times a week he gets to run and play and get tired out.
  • I pledge to provide my dog with mental stimulation in the form of either play, interactive toys, training, or off-territory leash walks, DAILY.
  • I pledge to provide my dog with enough training and/or behavioral management so as to enable him to be a welcome part of my community, or managed safely.
  • I pledge to provide my dog ample outlets for his instincts (such as off territory leash walks/running, opportunities to sniff and explore the natural world, agility training, trick training, fun and rewarding obedience training, play with other dogs, etc.) so that he does not feel constantly frustrated, or develop behavioral problems because he is neglected or under-stimulated.
  • I pledge to provide a home in which my dog clearly knows there are certain rules to which I will insist on and he can count on.
  • I pledge to provide my dog with enough toys to satisfy his urge to chew.
  • I pledge to get professional help if my dog has or develops behavior or temperament problems, and, if safe, to manage my dog carefully so as not to endanger the people and other pets in my community.
  • I pledge to do everything I can to keep my dog from becoming a nuisance in my community.
  • I will not allow him to run free/out of my control, chase cars, bicycles, children, etc.
  • I will seek professional help to get my dog to be quiet, or keep him quiet both when I am home and away, so as not to disturb my neighbors.
  • I pledge to “scoop poop” from my dog when off my property, so that my dog and other dogs will always be welcome in public.
  • I pledge that if I have to move residences for any reason, I am aware that finding housing that accepts pets can take longer than average, but that I will commit to moving with my dog, as I would move with a member of my family.
  • I pledge that if, for any reason, I can no longer keep this dog, I will not abandon this dog, and I will return the dog to the shelter (if adopted from a rescue shelter) or leave ample time to find a new, appropriate home, tell the new owners truthfully all the dog’s behaviors, good and bad, and follow up occasionally to make sure the dog is safe and content.

PARTICIPANTS AND PROSPECTIVE ADOPTERS: In order to be able to provide this FREE service to the public, it is important that the Participants and prospective adopters recognize Pet Orphans does not have the staff to handle incoming calls regarding these pets. Furthermore, these animals have not been met by any representative of Pet Orphans and we have no knowledge of their health, temperament, history, etc., and as such, Pet Orphans assumes no liability for these animals.

PROSPECTIVE ADOPTERS: If you are interested in one of the animals that appears on our Private Adoption Assistance Program web pages, YOU NEED TO CONTACT THE RESCUER DIRECTLY. Do not contact Pet Orphans as we will not be able to provide you with any information on the pet or Participant.

Suggestion to Prospective Adopters: We recommend you read and keep a copy of an Adopters Bill of Rights which follows.

ACTION AND SOLEX

ACTION AND SOLEX

Names: Action and Solex (Brothers)
Breed: Mixed - Cat
Sex: Males
Age: 8 years (9 around mid August)
Weight: 9 & 11 pounds
Health: Excellent (Indoor Only)
Temperament: Friendly & Social

Action and Solex are brothers that I have had since they were kittens. Due to an increased family size, the cats no longer get the attention they deserve. They have been together their entire lives and cannot be separated. They get along with dogs, cats and children as long as hair-pulling is kept to a minimum. Both cats love to eat (although the fat one loves it more) and they love treats between meals and the occasional nip. Both love to play with fake mice & balls with bells. At night they prefer to cuddle with you on the couch and if you let them, in your bed. Just be prepared for a morning wake up call for breakfast. In the summer months they like to be shaved down (clippers provided) but take too long shaving and they'll try to get away. They don't claw the furniture and spend most of the time sun bathing or cuddling together on a chair or couch. Our dogs get along with them and I have seen the cats grooming our Doberman. They have always been indoor cats but they have gotten out an open door a few times, always to return. Both cats have been seen by Dr Reina at LA Pet Clinic most of their lives and their medical records can be transferred. All vaccines are up-to-date or will be at time of adoption. Both are micro-chipped.

BHAJAN and SIMRAN

BHAJAN and SIMRAN

I am looking for temporary or permanent care for my two 5.5 year old beautiful cats, named Bhajan and Simran, as looks like our move to Texas is imminent, and I am having trouble with getting the ok to bring them with us on the other side of the journey.

We have loved them 5 years now, local shelters all full, and are not no kill shelters in the L.A. area. Since they are considered older cats, they are up to be killed quickly if they go to a shelter, and if they are caught running the streets, they may pick them up and take them there anyway. They were just fixed, current on shots, and tested for kitty diseases (all negative, thank God), have been home for two days from getting all this done, and doing wonderful. They are two brothers and have been together since birth. They have been inside with us for the whole time, and don't even go near the door to try to "escape." They lay with bellies up, because they have learned to trust us. Sometimes when Simran and/or Bhajan lay on his or his belly, on the bed where he gets some sun, he actually puts his arm (excuse me, his paw) up over his eyes, as a person would to shade his eyes from getting too much sun. It looks like a little person lying there! I have pictures galore, from when they first came in to present. One sings My Country Tis of Thee With Me, mostly all through. They both give tail hugs when their food is being prepared, and sometimes when they just want a little pet on their head. They are a joy to watch together as a pair and need to stay together, as they have been together from birth.

Ideal would be somebody with a backyard or patio with a tree they could climb (but I am not putting conditions--we are desperate to save their lives.) All someone need do (if they end up outside cats) is have a couple little cat houses (like dog houses) where they had a blanket, and could crawl in at night, to be safe in case of Coyotes, and warm. If they end up inside, that is not the case. Otherwise, all someone need to do is just put down a little food and water twice a day, and pet them occasionally, and talk to them, and the cat box. I will discuss with anyone interested all the details. They love the high kitty voice, and Simran actually talks back to me. He answers me, when I say "Are you my baby?" He answers in the exact number of syllables, either yes I am, or I'm your baby! Toooooo cute! Even if I talk to his brother and he is far away in the apartment, if Simran hears my question are you my baby? He will chirp in from wherever he is, but in, and tell me, "I'm your baby!" I guess he gets a little jealous of his brother getting my attention. They're really like two kids! They are a special breed, Turkish Vans, (you can search the history of them, and know that they are a special breed, which are very beautiful, medium haired, and can actually swim if they need to from what I read, the way God made them. They are not overly noisy, don't meow all the time, or anything like that. Pretty much one would only hear when they were maybe wanting attention, or when spoken to. They are not a disturbance by constant meowing. They are beautiful with pure white fur, and black tails with a round circle marking about an inch above their tails (like a circle), and other very beautiful, spiritual black markings in a couple other places. Bhajan has a black mark over his right ear, and Simran has what would be considered all white forehead which is emphasized because his little ears are pure black. He also has a little black mark on one side of his chin.

They have (especially Simran) personality plus. When they are ready to eat, they will often times look at you and lick their lips. When you look at Bhajan's face, sometimes, when he's sitting peacefully somewhere and you get near him, you can actually see him with upturned lips, i.e. he smiles.

They deserve a loving home, as we have tried to give them even with all our struggles. They were born apparently on our apartment patio, and their mother was low on her milk, so as little kittens they were discovered by David, skinny, nearly starving, trying to eat the ant covered figs that had fallen to the ground from the fig tree that was there before management cut it down. David started feeding them, and they kept coming back, of course. They sort of had it made, as they had outside freedom, but could come by for food, and we had some eave covered shelves there on the patio, so David made them a covering so they could crawl up on a shelf into their little bed at night, and be sheltered from the rain. This arrangement was good for everyone because they had their freedom, and their basic needs met. The reason I let them in was that I saw a very large coyote on the patio one night that was mean and hungry. The next day I got the cat box, and said we'd try it, if they wouldn't knock everything over, and would cooperate, and with much work, David was able to make great progress with them. They used to run if there was any movement at all, but now, they just lay on the floor, often times belly up meaning they trust us, and remain calm, not running. Some things they still run from though, like if you make a sudden move, or they hear a louder sound they are not used to. They'll take off, but soon come back (all this happens inside).

PLEASE, if anyone has the right set up for them, and would be kind to them, and would enjoy having these little loves around to bless their lives, I would love to hear from them.

Sincerely and with gratitude,
Laura

ELLA

CHORUS

ELLA and CHORUS

This is Ella. She was a stray and came to me pregnant the day after my kitty of 15 years passed. I couldn't turn her away, it was too big of a sign. She was immediately affectionate and friendly to everyone. After a couple of weeks, she had SEVEN babies. Unfortunately, Ella can't stay with us. Six of her kittens have been placed but she and her son Chorus need homes. Ella is up to date with shots and is spayed. She is young, perhaps two years at most. She's kind of a big girl, about 8 pounds. She's a long-haired tortoise shell with exquisite yellow eyes. She can tolerate dogs if they leave her alone. She is a loving mother and has made friends with our other elderly kitty without causing problems. She's a funny girl and has lots of adorable little habits like licking your hair and wiggling her ears or sitting awkwardly on things. She purrs freely and enjoys being cuddled. She was a stray, and so sometimes gets a bit possessive of food, but has never attacked anybody. She responds quickly to a soft voice and loving pets.

Chorus was so named because of his long, expressive, and frequent meows. Chorus has things to say and is looking for people who will talk back!! If he's not discussing Occupy LA or the state of the music industry he is talking with his tail. He has been nicknamed "Talks With Tail" due to his thrashing it back and forth as he waddles through the house. He always makes me laugh and loves a good petting as well as a bit of wrestling! Chorus was also blessed with the best genes of the litter and can alternate between looking exotic & sophisticated and adorable and huge, childlike with eyes that will swallow you up. He has silky black fur with a touch of white on his tummy. He is four months old and will be soon neutered and given his first round of shots. He's an indoor boy and has had only the finest kitty food. If you are looking for a comedian, young intellectual, and chess partner, Chorus is your man!

Any questions, please contact Laura at (818) 267-7062 or haushinka168680@yahoo.com

NAN

TUCK

NAN and TUCK

Been bouncing around from place to place as it was said their original owner is now incarcerated. (I guess that's one reason not to take your pets with you). Sadly, they have been in a couple of places before finding a foster. It's been said they are brother and sister, about 7 months old. Mainecoon mixes (with Tuck looking more the breed). Upon arrival to the foster they were spayed and neutered, fiv/felv tested (negative), put current on shots and ready to find a permanent home.

Each has their own personality with Tuck more adventurous to investigate. Nan warms up, but a bit slower. Each loves the strokes of a friendly hand. And have plenty of cat toys around - They enjoy playing. Hoping to place them together. Must be indoor home only and a ready to commit to the full life of this pet.

SMASHPANTS

PONYTAIL

SMASHPANTS and PONYTAIL

I am looking for a loving home for my two cats due to an increased asthmatic condition and excessive travel required for a change in position beginning in early March 2012. Over the past several years my asthma has made it difficult to allow my cats anywhere near my bedding and makes contact with them fairly difficult. They are both very loving and responsive pets and would benefit from an owner who can pay them the physical attention that they desire.

Smashpants is a 7 year old spayed female with tortoiseshell markings and a short coat. She was a rescue that I received at about 2 months old. I have been the only owner besides the original rescue family and she has lived predominantly indoors besides a place with a rooftop. She seems disinterested in the outdoors. She has lived with several other cats of previous roommates and gets along well with other cats. She is a bit of a round cat but has a laid back, somewhat lazy personality. Smashpants loves to cuddle and does play extensively with the other cat I am also looking for a home for - she somewhat took a mothering role for the other cat when I got her and now they pretty much entertain each other. She has had no known medical conditions and is current with all shots.

Ponytail is a 3 year old spayed female with a black short coat. She was a rescue that I received at about 2 months old. I have been the only owner besides the original rescue family and she has lived predominantly indoors besides a place with a rooftop. Ponytail is interested in both the indoors and outdoors and could potentially be suited for an owner with an enclosed yard. She has only lived with my other current cat above, but is friendly and inquisitive. Ponytail has a very small frame and is a very active, playful cat – she still has quite a bit of kitten in her. Ponytail is very friendly with people and loves to get her belly rubbed. Ponytail is very active with the other cat I am also looking for a home for, they pretty much entertain each other. She has had no known medical conditions and is current with all shots.

I am willing to spilt the cats up for the right homes, but as mentioned they do really enjoy each other and keep each other fairly occupied. Both cats are litter box trained with NO PROBLEMS. I have had them using cardboard scratchers and my furniture is ignored. Both are used to indoor spaces and eat dry food exclusively.

I am willing to have any testing, shots, etc. done and a full check up with my vet in addition to micro chipping each of them if requested. I would also like to offer purchasing the new owners anything that they need to start off their cat family or add to their clan. As you may gather this is a really difficult process and I want to find owner's who can provide these two great cats two amazing homes. I am more than willing to allow you over to spend as much time as needed with them to gauge their personalities…and will be forever grateful to whomever can help with this hard time.

Please contact me via email at kristenaenglish@gmail.com Or phone 310.363.5014

Thanks –
Kristen

CALI

CALI

Hi, this is Cali. Cali is a 2 year old female Lab-Pit mix. This poor girl lost her family. They had to move to England but England doesn't allow any pit breeds or mixes into the country. They won't even allow dogs that resemble a Pit. They thought of flying her into Paris and then driving to London but they found out they could end up in prison if caught smuggling in a Pit mix. They left her with a dog trainer-walker for about two months hoping that they could find her a home but no luck. Now she is with a foster. Cali is great with children. Her family had two elementary age daughters. She is good with dogs but not with cats. The dog trainer she lived with taught her several commands and she is housebroken. Cali is spayed, vaccinated, dewormed, a fecal test was done, frontlined, and microchipped. Contact Terrell at 323-385-8993 or tc2806@hotmail.com

CANDY

CANDY

Beautiful, precious little Candy, a 2 year old, 12 lb. Chihuahua mix, was tragically hit by a car. A good samaritan saw the whole thing, she was laying lifeless in the street and the woman picked her up a laid her on the grass while calling animal control. Her owners were not found, so we raised money for her surgery to repair a shattered pelvis and separated femur. She is now recovering and doing great! Loves to play with toys and other dogs. This girl is a total lovebug! Vaccinated and microchipped. Will be spayed once she heals fully from the surgery. We do not adopt out to homes with children under 10 years of age.

DANIEL and DANDELION

DANIEL and DANDELIONL

SAINT VALENTINE'S DAY ALERT: PERMANENT LOVING HOME NEEDED FOR DANIEL AND DANDELION.

Daniel and Dandelion were out of time. They were about to be euthanized when we saved them from the Los Angeles shelter system together. Daniel and Dandelion are so bonded that we do not want to separate them--ever. Daniel is about 12 months old, and weighs about 8 pounds. Dandelion is about 18-24 months old, weighs about 9 pounds, and is a little Silky/Westie Terrier. Daniel and Dandelion had 16 other little brothers, sisters, and assorted relatives who were all dumped at an L.A. shelter. Some were adopted, others were euthanized, leaving Daniel and his best friend Dandelion behind—totally out of time as the shelter was crowded with abandoned animals. Daniel and Dandelion have been groomed, neutered, spayed, vaccinated, de-wormed, and lovingly cared for, and have come out of their shells of shyness. GUINNESS

GUINNESS

Guinness is small terrier-poodle mix with the softest fur you'll ever pet. He's a very cuddly boy who would love to sit on your lap and be pet all day. He would do well in a home with older kids or no kids. A home with babies or toddlers won't work. We love him dearly but have to give him up because he feels threatened by our toddler and snapped at him. But he would make a wonderful companion for adults.

LOBO

LOBO

Meet Lobo, a shepherd husky mix about 2 ½ years young who managed to survive a night in coyote territory as someone tied him to the gates of the Wild Life Way Station in Tujunga. Fortunately by morning he was found and taken inside, but as you know that is not a facility for dogs. So off he went to the shelter to see if someone was looking for him. Of course, no one showed up, but the rescuer that took him to the shelter could not leave him there to die, so out he came. Unfortunately and sadly the man who saved this dog's life and fell in love with him realizes he is in his 80's and not such great health and it's not fair to a young dog to pay the consequences of being rescued only to die when there is no one left to care for him. So, Lobo is looking for a home. Great with people and would easily recommend him to a family with kids (maybe 8 and above), but is best as an only dog and no cats. He would also do a great job of keeping the squirrels out of your yard. If you are looking for a great companion and good listener please contact Jenn at jenn@petorphans.org for more infomation.

MOLLY

MOLLY

Molly (female, gold & white lab mix, 4 yrs old, 60#) has been a member of our family since she was 8 weeks old. She is loving, affectionate, devoted and brings us much joy. She'll play when you want to play and snuggle when you want to snuggle. We love her so much, but know that what's best for her is to find a new, loving home. Molly has always been a bit nervous and skittish, and that has increased since our baby came along last year. Molly's anxiety led to her running away a few months ago and getting out over this past weekend and biting another dog. But, that's not Molly's characteristic behavior. She's just overwhelmed in our environment.

Molly recently went to two weeks of intensive training with an animal behavior specialist & has been on some medication to help her nerves for the last month, both of which seem to have helped her. She's spayed and up to date on all vaccinations.

Molly needs a new home where there aren't so many stresses, and with a little toddler, we just can't offer that to her. We love her so much that we are willing to give her up, so that she can have the happy, stress-free life that she deserves. Please call Katie at (818) 359-0805 if you are interested in meeting Molly.

SAMMY

SAMMY

Sammy is a year and a half old neutered puppy with all his shots, who is looking for his forever home. What is this sweet, friendly bundle of joy? Possibly a terrier mix - there may be some dachshund and/or Chihuahua . He loves the other dogs in his foster home, and is respectful of the cats. He has done well with several dog visitors, and although he may on occasion take offense upon initially meeting a new dog, he usually becomes their pal after the introduction. Sammy had a traumatic time as a puppy in a shelter, but time in a loving foster home is making him forget all that and become a happy, well-adjusted new pup.

Sammy is healthy, fit - a sweet fifteen pound pup with pogo sticks for legs. A natural athlete, he hasn't realized just how high he can jump, so we recommend fences and gates over five feet tall.

Sammy is very affectionate and really seeks out companionship. He would therefore do best in a home where someone can give him lots of attention and become his best pal. He would also thrive around another dog or two, as he is playful, active and friendly. He has been crate trained, but he prefers to sleep as close as he can to another warm body!

A smart and agile athlete, Sammy would be a great companion for an active individual who also enjoys competitive activities. Sammy is in training in the exciting new sport of K9 Nosework www.k9nosework.com and he shows promise in this pioneering sport. He has dabbled in the canine agility obstacle world, racing through tunnels and leaping over jumps set to heights for taller dogs! Not into competition? Sammy enjoys a nice healthy hike along with his pal as well.

Sammy's adoption would require an application, a home visit/meet and greet, a two week trial adoption, and an adoption donation. Please contact Sara at either (310) 387-6605 or natalieandme@yahoo.com if you think you might be a good match for this loving, long legged athletic fellow (or if you just have questions!).

SASHA

SASHA

About a week ago, I was out hiking in the hills when I came across a little pitbull girl. She was infested with fleas and ticks, and had scratched herself raw in multiple places. I immediately took her to the vet clinic where my fiancee works. They got her cleaned up and took care of the fleas and ticks. She was not wearing a collar and did not have a microchip. We have searched intensely for her owners, to no avail. Considering the condition we found her in, I'm not surprised that nobody has come forward; she obviously was not well taken care of. A physical exam by my vet found her to be healthly. We have since had her spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. She is a super sweet, loving dog. We currently have 4 dogs and a cat...we are at our limit. I can hold onto her for awhile, but I really need to find a place for this girl. She seems to be okay with other dogs (she has met mine through a fence, and I get no signs of anxiety or aggression), she has no food aggression whatsoever. She is almost housebroken. Mostly, she likes being a couch potato. This is an awesome dog and she deserves an awesome life.

Current name: Sasha
Breed: Staffordshire Terrier/Pit Bull
Age: approx. 3 years
Sex: Spayed Female
Weight: 55 pounds
Microchipped
Healthy, recent blood panel done

SASHA

SASHA

Meet Sasha,

I am a very sweet senior (estimate 10 years plus or minus) Shepherd/sheltie mix in need of re-homing. She lost her home when her owner was found unconscious and it was determined he would not be returning from the hospital. Her other four legged companion and Sasha waited a week before a good samaritan came to the rescue and made some calls in hopes they would be rescued. Fortunately for Sasha a temporary foster was found, but it was too late for her friend - She died waiting.

Not much is known of her history as her owner suffered a brain tumor and no paper work followed Sasha. Other then being sweet, she is about 30 #, good with other dogs and cats. and loves the company of people. Is housebroken and walks okay on a leash. Blood work was done and no abnormalities found, however, her hearing is not so good anymore. She does have sight. If you can open your heart and home to give her the rest of her life safe and loved, please contact for more information. Arlene Ober - oberarlo@sbcglobal.net 818 708 2797.

SOPHIE

SOPHIE

Sophie is a gorgeous, healthy, 5 month old half English Bulldog, half American Bulldog. I rescued her from her owner but cannot keep her because she is way too much for my 12 year old Bichon Frise. Since I have to separate them and am going back to work, we need to place her in her forever home and will not allow her to go to a shelter or kennel. She will need puppy obedience classes and a pet parent who is willing to spend time working with her. She follows me like a shadow and LOVES to play. She is non aggressive and very loving, but children should be 1o years and up because of her size and energy. If she has to live with a sibling, its best for her to be with a large breed dog. She favors women, but will be a great dog for an owner who lavishes love, time and attention upon her. Contact Jamie at if you are serious and interested. jamie_j@verizon.net
